FRESHMEN TRIO LEAD LIONS IN SHOOTOUT VICTORY
Wednesday, January 23, 2013
With their playoff hopes hanging in the balance, the Lions would rely on a trio of freshmen in a shootout to beat Saint Vincent 4-3. Brandon Herrman, Jeff Nelson, and Conlan Sodrosky would all score in the shootout victory. Saint Vincent took an early 1-0 lead on a breakaway that got behind defensman Harrison Pitts. Bench Kinch would respond on an outlet pass from Jeff Nelson. Matt Torello would give the Lions a 2-1 lead in the second period breaking into the slot late from a feed from Nelson. The Lions would take a 3-1 lead on a power play goal by Brandon Herrman, assisted by David Diegel, and CJ Dunton. PSUA would have a let down and allow Saint Vincent to tie the score 3-3 late in the third. The two teams would enter overtime and the Lions would have to kill off a Ben Kinch penalty late. Zach Sheirko would have a huge glove save in overtime, one of his 42 saves of the night. With Kinch still serving his penalty during the shootout, Coach Lantz selected Brandon Herrman to shoot first. Brandon skated in, allowed the goalie to react first, open the wickets, and beat him five-hole. Saint Vincent would follow and also score with their first shooter. Jeff Nelson would be the Lion's second shooter, tucking the puck under the goalies arm for a 2-1 PSU advantage. Saint Vincent's second shooter would never get the shot off and "Rico" would cover the puck. Then Conlan Sodrosky would bury the biscut and securing the Lions victory. PSU faces Pitt Greensburg next Saturday at Delmont at 7pm.
