GOALTENDING LETS LIONS DOWN AGAINST CAL
Sunday, November 6, 2011
THE PSU LIONS WOULD LOSE THEIR FOURTH STRAIGHT AGAINST CAL 9-3 ON OCTOBER 28, 2011. CAL WAS LOOKING FOR REVENGE FROM LAST YEARS 7-6 LOSS TO THE LIONS AT GALACTIC ICE AND THE SCORE WOULD NOT TELL THE WHOLE STORY. THESE TWO TEAMS HAVE A STORIED RIVALRY AND THIS GAME WOULD BE NO EXCEPTION. ENGERY AND EXCITEMENT WOULD BE HIGH AMONGST BOTH TEAMS. CAL WOULD SCORE THE FIRST TWO GOALS THEN FRESHMAN PETER REVEILLE WOULD SCORE 19 SECONDS LATER AND TRAIL 2-1. CAL WOULD ANSWER RIGHT BACK AND IT LOOKED AS IF THE LIONS WOULD END THE FIRST PERIOD TRAILING ONLY BY TWO. HOWEVER, WITH 3.2 SECONDS REMAINING, CAL WOULD FLOAT A GOAL OVER KEVIN KANDETZKE'S SHOULDER WHICH WOULD BE A DEMORALIZING GOAL. THE LIONS WOULD CONTINUE TO FIGHT AND WOULD SCORE TWO MORE GOALS. A POWER PLAY BY FRESHMAN SHANE WINTERS AND A EVEN STRENGTH GOAL BY FRESHMAN CHRIS STRIEBIG. COACH LANTZ SAID THIS ABOUT THE GAME. "THE BOYS FOUGHT HARD RIGHT TO THE BUZZER. WE NEED TO TIGHTEN UP THE DEFENSE AND CANNOT GIVE OUR OPPONENTS 61 SHOTS. WE ALSO NEED TO PUT MORE RUBBER ON NET. 14 SHOTS WILL NOT WIN US MANY GAMES. AT SOME PUT OUR GOALTENDERS NEED TO STEP UP AND GIVE US A SOLID FIRST PERIOD." JASON DIEHL WOULD HAVE 3 ASSISTS AND PETER REVEILLE WOULD HAVE A GOAL AND AN ASSIST.
