PSU SUFFERS LOSS IN OT TO WVU 5-4
Wednesday, October 19, 2016
PSU travelled to Morgantown for their first road trip of the year on October 9, 2016. Coming of a tie with Saint Vincent, the Lions were looking for a quick start. Six minutes into the period, sophomore Mike Lassik would strike first blood from Armen Asdourian. Then with five minutes remaining in the first period, Mike Pilla would give the Lions a 2-0 lead from Danese and Lassik. Both teams would have 12 shots. PSU has tried to preach fast starts to each period, control what you can control, win every shift, win every period, then win the game. With 14:29 remaining in the second period, WVU cut the deficit in half. At 5:21 WVU tied the score at two. The 3 minutes later, Gilchrist gave up a shot over his shoulder, forcing Coach Lantz to make a change. At the end of second, WVU lead 3-2 over the Lions. The Start of the third period began much like the second ended, as WVU scored 1:08 into the period, leaving the Lions trailing 4-2. Then 2:14 later Austin Chase would score his first goal of the season making it 4-3 from Matt Littler. Then with 1:52 remaining, Littler would tie the score. Then an untimely unsportsmanlike penalty to Mike Pilla, put the Lions shorthanded for the remaining of the period, forcing overtime. The teams would skate even during the five minute overtime until Austin Chase would take a tripping penalty forcing the Lions shorthanded once again. With 19 seconds remaining Sean Dolan would deflect a shot from the point past his own goaltender Kenneth Mack. WVU 5 PSU 4. "We came out very strong tonight, but during the second period, we let them dictate the style of play, and we got off our game. We gave up three very stoppable goals, and we had to play from behind once again. We were our own worst enemy for the second week in a row. Good news is we get them at home in a week."
