PSU Defeats IUP for First Place

There was a championship atmosphere at Galactic Ice on Saturday January 30, 2010 for a College Hockey East Showdown between the IUP Crimson Hawks and the Penn State Altoona Lions. Both teams entered the contest tied for first in the South Division, fighting for a first round bye in the playoffs. With so much on the line, both teams did not disappoint in a game that featured outstanding goaltending, both shorthanded and power play goals, 56 penalties, and 5 goals in the last five minutes. Bryan Koronowski led the Lions with 1 goal and 2 assists and broke a scoreless tie with a shorthanded tally in the second period. IUP would tie the game early in the third period. Jeff Rossi would make it 2-1. However, 5 seconds later IUP responded and would tie the game at 2-2. Freshmen Patrick Kinch would give the Lions a 3-2 lead on a power play goal. Less than 2 minutes later IUP once again forced a tie. Finally, with 39 seconds remaining, Freshmen Will Gaffney would score the game winner and give the Lions a 4-3 victory and sole possession of first place in the South Division. Chris Ryan made 19 of 22 saves in the win. This Improves PSU Altoona's record to 13-3 on the season. Next game is February 6, 2010 at 3:50PM at Galactic Ice against Penn State Behrend.
